Summer is on the way (if you're in Australia), and it's time for your annual reminder: it's time to wash those heavier knits and pop them away for winter.

I get asked this question all the time:

How do I wash my knitwear?

Firstly, only wash your knits if you have to!

I have young children, so I wash my knits more often. But if you keep your knits clean and wear undergarments, you shouldn't really need to wash them that often.

I start by running my water at a tepid temperature—not too hot, or too cold. Then I add a basic washing-up liquid—just a small squirt.

Soaking Knitwear

After washing it with my hands, I allow the jumper to soak for an hour or two. I then rinse all the washing-up liquid and check that any stains have been removed.

I remove as much water as I can with my hands.

To keep my knits in the best possible condition, I roll them in a towel. Once you unroll your towel, it should be wet and the knit should be a lot lighter.

Can I use a washing machine for my knitwear?

For cotton knitwear, you do have the option of putting this in a delicate bag and popping the knit on a spin. We would strongly advise against heavier knits and fabrics that aren't cotton as you can damage the fibres.

Can I use a washing machine on spin?

Using your washing machine in 'spinning' mode is possible if you are time-poor. But if you do have enough time, we would recommend rolling your knits in a towel. It's kinder to the materials and more favourable for the lifespan of your knit.

Lastly, dry your knits flat before you fold them away. If you are folding them away for winter, it may be a good idea to purchase some moth balls to store them with. This will keep the moths at bay and ensure your knits are in pristine condition for next winter.
